Structural Ingenuity for Modular Housing
Red Hook has a charming, creative community and a maritime village vibe. SHoP architects designed a modular housing series for the area. Known for their exploration of design production and fabrication techniques, they asked Agencie to act as the project’s structural engineer.
For the project, we engineered a hot rolled steel superstructure with cold formed light weight structural steel framing infill. The structure perches on top of a pile-supported pedestal. This negates the issues of the region's soft soils and the post-Hurricane Sandy flood plains.
As always, our work starts with hand sketches and calculations. We implement structural analysis models, and always collaborate closely with builders and craftspeople. It’s a process that helps us to design creative engineering solutions.
